The Mural

The wall that tells a story.

Painted in Waimea, this evolving mural honors the legendary Hawaiian paniolos whose courage and skill helped shape cowboy history. Inspired by the 1908 Frontier Days legacy and the spirit of Hawai‘i ranch culture, the mural blends history, movement, and identity into a powerful visual experience for the community.

Created through the vision of local artists and student collaboration, the mural stands as both an artwork and a cultural preservation project — connecting generations through storytelling, heritage, and aloha.

"The paniolo is more than a cowboy — it is a spirit of resilience, horsemanship, humility, and connection to the land."

Frontier Days

1908 — Hawai‘i Rides Into History

In 1908, Hawaiian paniolos traveled from the Big Island to compete in the world-famous Frontier Days rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Against all odds, they stunned audiences with their horsemanship, rope skills, and fearless riding.

Their victory introduced the world to the Hawaiian cowboy and forever cemented the paniolo legacy into American western history — a journey of more than 2,500 miles by ship and rail.
